The blatant inequality between the rich and poor in the Philippines is a disgrace to our society. The wealthy have taken advantage of their power and resources, leaving the majority to suffer in poverty. This is not just an issue of status, but of injustice caused by systemic inequalities that do not treat everyone as equals. As Elie Wiesel famously said, "There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest." It is our responsibility to raise our voices and demand change for a more just and equitable society.

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought these disparities to the forefront, with some able to weather the storm while others suffer from job losses, food insecurity, and lack of access to healthcare. This highlights the urgent need for systemic change in our policies and systems to address the root causes of poverty and inequality, such as lack of access to education, job opportunities, and affordable housing.

To build a just society, it is crucial that we prioritize social justice and equal opportunities for all. This means ensuring that everyone has access to the basic necessities for their well-being, such as quality education, healthcare, and economic opportunities. The government must take responsibility to provide aid and support to those in need, while businesses and individuals with means must play their part by giving back to the community.

It is also important to hold the wealthy accountable for their actions, including fighting against corruption and tax evasion. The government must ensure that they pay their fair share of taxes, instead of hiding their wealth and avoiding their responsibility to the common good. Social solidarity is the cornerstone of responsible citizenship, and we must work together to create a better future for all Filipinos.

Equality of status is not enough, we need equality of opportunities to ensure that everyone has a fair shot at success. Personal responsibility is important, but the government has a responsibility to provide everyone with equal access to the primary social goods. Talents and intelligence should be fairly compensated, and the wealthy must be held accountable for their unfair advantages.

Moreover, it is crucial that we prioritize education and the spread of knowledge. An informed and educated population is essential in promoting critical thinking and fostering a sense of responsibility for creating a better world. This means providing quality education for all, regardless of their background or socio-economic status. Only by empowering the next generation can we hope to build a future where everyone has equal opportunities to succeed.

Building a just society requires collective action, perseverance, and a commitment to making a positive difference in the world. Let us use the pandemic as an opportunity to challenge the status quo and push for real change in our policies and systems. Together, we can create a future where everyone has the opportunity to thrive, regardless of their background or circumstances. The time for change is now, and it is up to each and every one of us to make it a reality.
